Youth Ministries

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)

St Mark’s Youth Ministries is not defined by the city it is in, the schools that are in the area, or the clothes that are worn. It is a unique and special entity in and of itself. Saint Mark’s Youth Group is a supportive, loving, nurturing, inclusive, and positive environment filled with God’s love that welcomes all sixth through twelfth graders to question and explore their life and faith. The youth at Saint Mark’s are informed, brilliant, concerned, and have a clear opinion on many matters meanwhile they are crazy, goofy and know how to have fun. All friends new and old are welcome to come join in on our many adventures!

For more information about Youth Group, please contact Rev. Matthew McDermott, our Rector

AcolyteWorship

The young people of our parish contribute in many ways; some assist in regular services by being an acolyte, book holder, helping with children’s programs and/or childcare. There are also special occasions where the youth can lead services either at St. Mark’s or on special trips.

Adults Who Work With Youth

Volunteer youth ministers:

Our youth ministers: We have a committed team of adults who mentor, support and teach our teens in youth group. This group is responsible for pastoral relationships with the teens, planning and leading Sunday night youth group, and supporting special events.

Forms and Policies for Youth

Youth Commission:

The youth commission provides support to the staff and volunteer youth ministers. These committed folks help coordinate and organize all that needs to be done to make our ministry happen, especially administrative tasks and special event support. The commission is made up mostly of current and “graduated” parents of teens.

Youth Group!

The youth group at St. Mark’s is made up of members of St. Mark’s families in junior high and high school, and their friends. The goal of youth group meetings is to build an inclusive, supportive community that model’s God’s unconditional love and acceptance. The Sunday night youth group meeting includes dinner, games, educational activities, discussion, worship, and prayer. The program teaches aspects of Christian ethics, history, and scripture with a respect for all religions.
Since 6th grade to 12th grade includes a wide range of needs and developmental stages, middle school and high school small groups meet separately for activities and discussion.

Regular Youth Group Activities

Youth Group

Youth Group meets Sunday Nights during the school year from 5pm to 8pm. Our high school group meets from 5pm to 7pm and our middle school group meets from 6pm to 8pm, with a shared time for dinner and fun. Our goal is to create an inclusive, supportive community that model’s God’s unconditional love and acceptance. During youth group we share dinner, play games, have meaningful discussion, and end in prayer. Youth Group also includes regular outings of fellowship, fun, and service.

Friends and newcomers are always welcome at Youth Group Events. However, we do need “Community Agreement” and “Medical/Image Release” forms signed by parents before the start of the event.

Confirmation Preparation

“Baptism is full inclusion” in the Episcopal Church, making confirmation a personal, optional choice to affirm your place in the church, and the place of your faith in your life. Confirmation preparation can be a powerful spiritual journey. All youth in 8th – 12th grade are welcome to join in this exploration of faith and the Episcopal Church. Stay tuned for information on our next confirmation class.

Mission Trip to New Orleans

This summer 15 members of St. Mark’s Youth Group will be heading to Louisiana to work on rebuilding projects throughout the city. From August 3rd-10th we will be traveling to Trinity Church, where we will get to explore the city of New Orleans, learn about the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and help do some much needed repair work. We will be working hard in the upcoming months to raise money for the trip and prepare for our journey.
